The expansion of tree plantations across tropical biomes

چکیده

Across the tropics, recent agricultural shifts have led to a rapid expansion of tree plantations, often into intact forests and grasslands. However, this is poorly characterized. Here, we report tropical plantation between 2000 2012, based on classifying nearly 7 million unique patches observed cover gain using optical radar satellite imagery. The resulting map was subsample all but coupled it with an extensive random accuracy assessment (n = 4,269 points) provide unbiased estimates expansion. Most predicted (69.2%) consisted small natural regrowth (31.6 ± 11.9 Mha). plantations also dominated increases in across tropics (32.2 9.4 Mha) 92% occurring biodiversity hotspots 14% arid biomes. We estimate that expanded 9.2% accessible protected areas humid most frequently southeast Asia, west Africa Brazil. Given international planting commitments, critical understand how future will affect remaining ecosystems. Changes practices Nearly are classified through imagery 2012.

Native tree species regulate nitrous oxide fluxes in tropical plantations.

Secondary and managed plantation forests comprise a rapidly increasing portion of the humid tropical forest biome, a region that, in turn, is a major source of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions to the atmosphere. Previous work has demonstrated reduced N2O emissions in regenerating secondary stands compared to mature forests, yet the importance of species composition in regulating N2O production in ...

Thermal limits of leaf metabolism across biomes.

High-temperature tolerance in plants is important in a warming world, with extreme heat waves predicted to increase in frequency and duration, potentially leading to lethal heating of leaves. Global patterns of high-temperature tolerance are documented in animals, but generally not in plants, limiting our ability to assess risks associated with climate warming. To assess whether there are globa...

Drivers of tree species distribution across a tropical rainfall gradient

Understanding the factors shaping species distribution patterns along tropical rainfall gradients is necessary to predict the consequences of climate change for tropical tree communities. Direct effects of water availability exclude wet forest species from dry forests, but the exclusion of dry forest species from wet forests remains unexplained. We tested the hypothesis that high light and nutr...

Domestication of native tree species for timber plantations: key insights for tropical island nations

A review of tree domestication principles, practices and case studies illustrates the importance of a methodological approach to domestication. Domestication of new species involves of the entire value chain from identification of candidate species, through production and management, to uptake by communities and markets. Efforts to domesticate forest trees have often neglected the final step of...

In this study, the early development of monocultures and mixtures of Cedrela odorata, Cordia alliodora, and Hyeronima alchorneoides was measured to determine what interspecific differences in structural characteristics lead to good ecological Ž . combining ability in fast-growing tropical tree species. Plantations were established at high density 2887 treesrha on fertile alluvial soil in the hu...
